I stress in my books the importance of following laws, not trespassing, and being smart. Don't go ghost hunting on railroad tracks. Here is another news channel story about it. Watch video and read the story here. Add Comment Library of Congress 08/23/2010
I often find photos for books and articles on the Library of Congress site. I just found out the buildings are haunted. Check it out. From DC Hauntings: The Library of Congress is a lesser known haunted building on Capitol Hill. It does have its share of ghosts however. The most told ghost story is the police officer who resides in the stacks. He has been seen in both his uniform as well as his casual clothes. He has helped several people exit the stacks when they have become lost in the miles and miles of books. According to the description of the man (and his name, as he tells people) he was a sergeant who died several years ago. This occurrance is well known among many library employees. Other occurrances in the library's main building include doors opening by themselves, constant banging on the steps, and a mysterious dark haired man. One of the strangest recent events happened about three years ago when some painters were doing some work in the north corridor on the second floor. The area was closed to the public, and the workers needed get a cart by two heavy curator cases. One case moved about a foot, all by itself, allowing the workers to get the cart through. Bonnie & Clyde 08/21/2010
After finishing up my Donner Party experience, I stopped in at a gas station to grab a snack and drink and stumbled upon the famous Bonnie and Clyde car. It took a little bit to find, it was in the rear of the casino attached to the gas station, but I found it!!! Keep an eye on Haunt Juants for my Bonnie and Clyde story. But for now here are some teasers. Donner Party 08/17/2010
These are the three campsites the Donner Party stayed at. The Graves/Reed campsite is next to a stripmall, marked by a cross, the Donner campsite is now, ironically a picnic area, and the Murphy cabin is not far from the museum and momument, near Donner Lake. Read more about my journey into the past at http://hauntjaunts.net/blog/2010/08/14/donner-pass/ On another note, rumors of buried treasure from the families of the Donner Party still are hidden near Donner Lake. I just found out that Haunts of the Southwest is available for preorder. Celebrate with me by picking up a copy early. They are going fast, don't miss out! Last year I visited Virginia City, NV, took a few photos for Haunts of the Southwest. Sadly the photos did not make it in the book, but they are great photos and should be shared. These people were people who are buried in the cemetery. They walked around and told their stories, really a great tour. This year I restrained myself from heading up to Virginia City, instead I ventured all over the Donner Pass and in to Truckee. For some reason I only pulled out pictures of women, there were men in costume too. Here is one of them, a fireman who posed with me. Vacations are fun, coming home is better. 07/22/2010
Back from Vacation.. checked out Donner Pass, including the Graves cabin spot near the outlet mall and the Donner cabin site. On the way back from that adventure I stumbled upon the Bonnie and Clyde car at a casino on the outskirts of Reno. Pictures and more info to come about those. On the other page I wanted to see the Bowers Mansion near Carson City, turns out that it is closed for the season due to budget cuts. Grr. Still the ghosts don't care if its closed or not. More to come later on that subject as well. Must get to unpacking and uploading photos. Taking a trip 07/08/2010

The other night I watched the Stephen King movie 1408. The main character is a writer of ghost stories. He visits hotels and writes about the paranormal going on’s there. I don’t personally visit everyplace I write about, and I write about more than just haunted hotels, but in any case I related to the main character. He admits to have never had a paranormal experience. He states that many of the places he writes about boasts and hypes up their ghostly inhabits to hopefully generate more business. I have encountered this many times, and I have encountered the businesses that do not want their ghost story publicized. All depends on the management. Occasionally there are so many stories floating around that I tend to believe that ghost story may be true and the management is denying it for whatever reason they may have. I have never had a ghostly encounter, nor do I think you need loads of expensive equipment to experience something. If you want to experience the paranormal, just go. Go to the museum, hotel, restaurant, cemetery, and one day when you least expect it you too shall experience the unknown. Now get off the internet and experience life and maybe more. Spontaneous Human Combustion 05/30/2010
![]() Sometimes I lay awake at night and worry. I worry about the usual things, money, if the door is locked, or if I will make my deadline. I never worry about bursting into flames. Maybe I should, maybe we all should. Spontaneous Human Combustion is a strange thing. For unknown reasons you burst into flames or burn slowly, no one knows for sure which it is and it could be both. Nothing burns around you and for some reason you do not struggle just burn up. Sometimes not all of you is incinerated but parts are left, your legs, a hand, or just a foot in some cases. July 2, 1951, Mary Reeser was found by her landlord after smelling a strange odor. The doorknob to Mary’s apartment was searing hot. From approximately 4 feet off the ground a covering of moist soot blanketed everything. Mary was reduced to a glowing mound of ashes, her overstuffed arm chair barely burnt as was the side table next to her and beyond that a pile of newspapers neatly stacked remained preserved. February 20, 1725, Nichole Miller was found by her husband an innkeeper. A newspaper explained what remained. “A part of the head only, with a portion of the lower extremities and a few of the vertebrae, had escaped combustion. A foot and a half of the flooring under the body had been consumed, but a kneading-through and a powder tub, which were very near the body, had sustained no injury.” There are several theories out there how this could happen. The “Wick Effect” is the most popular and widely accepted. A cigarette or static electricity starts a fire on your clothing and then your fatty flesh melt off and drip into your clothing causing you to become a human candle. To be perfectly honest, I would jump up and freak out if this happened well before my fatty flesh could melt off. Even if I were asleep, I am sure I would wake up at the searing pain of my flesh burning. Wouldn’t you? | ArchivesDecember 2011 CategoriesAll |
